Shopping and supporting local never goes out of style, especially when the wares are handmade. Read on as we spotlight three women who turned their passions into thriving small businesses.

Church House Studios

The name says it all with this unique small biz. After purchasing an old church in 2016 to renovate into her home, Aimee Gray couldn’t find any decor items in stores that fit the aesthetic. Having always had a passion for art, she began creating her own pieces for her new home. Her distinctive style quickly caught the eye of family and friends, and she turned it into a full-time business in 2018.

Church House Studios now offers hand-carved wood art and home decor, along with her wildly successful custom-burned rancher hats. Shop her items online, or in-store at Modern Makers Shop in Peterborough. (P.S. Aimee also offers workshops at MMShop to create your own 3D wood art!)

Three Wicks Candles

After 30-plus years in the healthcare industry, Diane Kennedy was looking for something to keep her busy after retirement. She landed on candle making. Three Wicks is a sweet ode to her three daughters — the “lights of her life.” Hand-poured in small batches in Courtice, Ont., her candles are 100% soy wax and made to be as eco-friendly and natural as possible. Visit her website to shop and to see the list of stores carrying Three Wicks products. You can also take workshops with Diane as she partners with other local makers to offer wreath- and candle-making and more.

Infused Handcrafted

Nothing screams self care like bath bombs, shower steamers, sugar scrubs and luxurious soaps. Created in Northumberland County by Lauren Irwin, Infused Handcrafted was the first Canadian small business to offer products that were infused exclusively with essential oils. Her products are made with organic, chemical-free and food-grade ingredients. Whether you’re dreaming of a bath soak or simply taking in the sweet scents of fall, we recommend trying her bestselling autumnal and winter aroma—Snickerdoodle. It’s a delectable infusion of cinnamon, nutmeg and bezion essential oils.
